Real Madrid started their new Champions League campaign with a chaotic but ultimately successful 2-1 win over Marseille, thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s ice-cold finishing from the penalty spot.
It wasn’t the smoothest night for Los Blancos. Trent Alexander-Arnold lasted only three minutes before pulling up injured, and his replacement Dani Carvajal saw red late in the second half after a clash with Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli. Down to ten men, Madrid still found a way to push through—and as usual, it was Mbappé who made the difference.
Timothy Weah had given Marseille an early lead after Mason Greenwood’s pressing forced a turnover in midfield, and for a moment the French side looked ready to punish Madrid. But that spark didn’t last. Just six minutes later, Mbappé leveled the score from the spot after Geoffrey Kondogbia clumsily brought down Rodrygo in the box.
From there, the spotlight belonged to Mbappé. He attempted everything—an acrobatic bicycle kick that went just wide, relentless dribbles, and constant pressure on Marseille’s backline. By the end of the match, he led every major attacking stat: most shots, most chances created, most goals. He even rattled the post once for good measure.
Real had to survive a couple of nervy moments, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang testing Courtois twice, but the Belgian keeper stood firm. And when Vinícius Jr forced a handball from Facundo Medina late on, Mbappé stepped up again. Same corner, same result: 2-1 Madrid.
After the match, UEFA named Mbappé their Player of the Match, praising not just his goals but his overall impact—especially in the first half, where he caused Marseille all sorts of problems while also working hard defensively. Thibaut Courtois highlighted how the new coach, Xabi Alonso, demands all the creative players—Mbappé, Arda Güler, Vinícius—to track back and defend as a unit. According to Courtois, that’s a big reason why opponents are struggling to break Madrid down.
For Marseille, the result continues a brutal pattern. They’ve now lost seven of their last eight opening Champions League fixtures and 19 of their last 22 matches in the competition.
For Madrid, though, it’s a statement win. Ten men, under pressure, and still able to lean on Mbappé to get the job done. With six goals in five games already this season, the Frenchman looks like he’s just getting started.
Next up, Real Madrid travel to Kazakhstan to face Kairat, while Marseille try to regroup at home against Ajax.
